I also occasionally have this problem! Try these ideas:
1) hide different objects in rice or beans (in plastic tubs) but put down a sheet or tablecloth first) or just use plain rice/beans to 'scoop', 'stir', etc. using plastic spoons/bowls, etc.
2) hide puzzle pieces in a playdoh to find
3) I use the Ned's Head game without the original parts: also can put pictures, objects, or puzzle pieces in his head to find.
Here's an activity I recently created for my little ones:
I bought cheap fly swatters (actually shaped like hands!!) and velcro dots. I put one side of velcro on the fly swatter and the opposites side on several large-ish picture printed on cardstock and had the kiddos 'slap' the pictures saying 'big ball' or 'red shirt', etc. hope this helps. it's definitely frustrating sometimes always coming up with new and motivating activities for the young crowd!
