I just met today with a 3 yr. old little guy who has been diagnosed with apraxia. He does not imitate any sounds but a few approximated vowels were observed while he ran around. When a model is presented to him, he takes a deep breath but does not produce any sounds or even blow out. When he is told the names of pictures in a book, he takes deep breaths in for each picture as if he is going to say something, but nothing comes out.
He does not like anything to touch his lips, even popsicles or lollipops. He does not kiss. He has been observed by his mother approximating /e/, /i/, /aI/ but not any sounds, such as /o/ or /u/, that require lip rounding. He has no consonants. He likes only crunchy foods and likes biting hard objects. He is just beginning to imitate large arm movements. Has anyone else had child who constantly inhales instead of producing any sounds? Any ideas on what to do about it or his lip aversion? Prior therpists have tried nuks, brushes, etc and he will cry when he see them. Thanks for your help.
