I am working with a 30 month old girl who's mother speaks Japanese and father speaks English. Mom understands some English and dad speaks some Japanese. The little girl has only about 5 words (in English) and uses quite a bit of jargon and mom says that she is not using a words in Japanese. She is very expressive non verbally through facial expressions and has picked up some signs in the month that I have been working with her. I encourage mom to continue to speak to her in her native language because she is with mom the majority of the time and she needs a good model of language and mom provides the best model in Japanese. I will hopefully have a translator come out in the next week or so since I only speak English. Is there anything more that I should be doing to help this girl. I feel a little lost and don't know where to go to meet her needs. I have thought a little bit about apraxia but she copies oral movements with ease, she will imitate some words (1 time) or animal sounds when highly motivated. Any help is appreciated.
