I think preschoolers sometimes just don't comprehend the idea of a word as having any sort of a shape, beginning, or end. When they start to learn literacy skills it all begins to make sense because they see a two-dimensional word in front of them, but if your student is not at that level yet, it might be too abstract for him to understand.
I have had incidental -- but good -- luck with teaching S-blends as part of cycles, to target initial consonants. I make sure to start with auditory bombardment so they hear the sequence of "ssssss" + a word. We practice making a "sssss" sound and then make a snake motion crawling up the arm while we say "sssss" and then the rest of a CVC word. I have the most luck with "sp" and "st" words (I include Spongebob and SpiderMan as target words, even though I don't get perfect pronunciation) but there might be others that work better for your student. Even if they don't get the s-blend perfectly, they seem to pick up the sequence of using an initial consonant.
