Few,
I’ll try to answer your questions and give you as much info as I can.
How often do all of the team members meet, and is it hard to get everyone coordinated?
When we started the team approach, we (adaptive PE, SLP, OT, PT, and teacher) met for 2-3 hours to discuss the plan, the themes, each one’s responsibilities, etc. After that initial meeting, we really did not need to meet again. Any other communication would happen by e-mail or a quick exchange after our groups with the students.
How long do the centers last?
We start with the entire group on the rug. I read the theme related book, ask “wh” questions, AND/OR, have some language activity (sequencing, opposites, rhyming, categorizing, etc.). This usually takes about 15-20 minutes max. For example, if the theme was pets, I would read
The groups then split up into groups of 4-5 and rotate to one of the following:
1. Fine motor- The OT will have an activity related to the story/theme. For example, pet theme- the fine motor activity would be cutting out a black line puppy, printing their name on the back and then gluing on pieces of yarn on the puppy to make a “long-haired” fuzzy puppy. [ SLP and OT run this group]
2. Gross motor-The APE teacher would bring equipment for the outside activity for gross motor activity. For example, staying with the pet theme, she brought a balance beam (low to the ground of course) and the students carry a play bone as they walk across the beam and drop the bone in a puppy “food bowl”. [ APE and para run this group]
3. Music- The teacher and other para have a music activity that is theme related. Pet theme- pretend to be pets and do the Pet Hokey-Pokey- “put your right paw in, take your right paw out, put your tail in, put your tail out, etc.
Each group lasts about 10-15 minutes. We are all done in less than an hour. We call this our “Literacy Group”. We meet 1 time per week.
We occasionally return to the circle to say good bye.
We used the book, “Learning to Move, Moving to Learn” as our guide to get started. We have wonderful teachers who e-mail us at the end of each week and let us know the theme for the coming week. Most of the time the teachers and paras will have all the materials ready for the fine motor groups. I use the site below frequently for my book choice and “wh” questions.
That is all I can think of for now. I will be glad to answer any other questions. We love this model and now that we have been at it for awhile, it is so easy to prepare. The kids love it.
If you e-mail me at work, I can give you the specifics on the “Learning to Move, Moving to Learn” book. susan.todd@lpsb.org

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.
