I am new in the filed(still in my cf) and I recently started doing early intervention. My first case is a 27 month old with down syndrome. She is not vocalizing at all, she has no functional play skills(she mouths everything) absolutely no interest in any toy or activity( I tried bubbles, a small piano like thing, pop up toys, dolls, cars...I mean everything..food) mom also finds that nothing really interests her as well. She does not focus...she just sits there and stares everywhere but at me or mom, and I am really anitmated with her initially, but I scaled back to see which also did not work(absolutely no focus..no joint attention..)
She does not interact at all. If you want her attention on something...you have to physically hold her face...and even then her eyes are still looking everywhere but at you...Nothing really stimulates her. She does not imitate. She will just sit there clap her hands, and grind her teeth, looking around.
I am really starting to think that there may be more going on there than just DS. Please advise...because this is really bothering me....I don't really see how I can help her.
