I have found that teaching vocabulary may seem like the easy way but the child does not have a strong motivator. The principles used when working with children on the spectrum often are useful with preschool aged children with significant delays. Think about requesting as your focus. Work using communication temptations, things the child loves (bubbles, trains, food). Set up situations where the child needs to use you to get what they want(put toys out of reach). In the beginning use errorless teaching practices and automatic reinforcement to pair yourself with the motivators you use. There is a wealth of information on the internet about "verbal behavior". The approach works well with all language delayed children. Remember request, request, request (mand, mand, mand).
