I do a hearing screening with the OAE as part of our EI evaluations (a hearing screening is required in my state). Although I was trained on it briefly, I feel that I've not been very successful in using the OAE. Kids almost always get a "refer" (fail) result. I don't know if it's just that toddlers don't stay still enough, or if there is some strategy I could use to get more accurate results... e.g. are there any tricks for placing the probe (maybe I don't have it in at the right angle??)
When we did the training, all the adults (we tested each other) got "refer" results too so perhaps the OAE is just really sensitive. (I wasn't surprised that I got "refer" since I have allergies; I don't know about the other folks.) If anyone else uses the OAE, I'd be interested to hear what your experiences are and if you have any tips that could help me. Thanks!
