I have done the ball tossing with my 3 and 4 year olds. I just get them to name 2 items for a category. (Tell me 2 things u wear when you are cold. Tell me 2 types of things you drink.)
And slowly get them to name 3 items. 
Or, I guess, it will be tedious, but to get a bunch of pictures of common items (things you write with, things u cook with, different types of toys) and get them to put them into categories. But that is kinda like sorting.
