THE PEOPLESCHAMP SUPER BENCH REPORT
Took the new 2008 beamer for its first long distance drive and let me tell you guys if you are going drive, drive a BMW it is the smoothest and most comfortable thing you can drive.
Set the GPS on the Europe Bench show and took off from Austin at 7 am after stopping at Rudys for breakfast and then just after Waco had to stop at Whatabuger for a double meat and cheese. Next stop the Dallas convention center.
After parking and getting to the first entrance of the convention center ended up beside none other than my good buddy KEN LAIN “Mr. Benchpress” (also a member of THE TEXAS POWERLIFTING HALL OF FAME )he was to be honored for his contributions to the sport . He is still a Texas Gentleman. Very cool..
Once in the expo I walked around and greeted millions and millions of the peoples fans. First up was the HOP booth and Rick Brewer, has some of the best shit in the sport and he was busy selling. Then ran into another buddy and super nice guy Jim V and after dropping a 100 pounds, he looks pretty good!
Ran into Tom McCollugh and his wife and he just had Gail bladder surgery. Ouch! Talked to Jesse about his strategy and just as I was going to give JK some People’s Tips , Franky ease drops and has to show off his wife! (good to see she made it back to the USA, not sure why for him?) hehehehehee
Then took in some of the many booths and some of the hot rods on display, wow! Ended up at the INZER BOOTH and first up was the great Peter Throne, John’s right hand man and he was in high spirits, even hooked the champ up with free meet shirts (which were pretty cool). Then talked with John for a short time and must say he was in pretty good shape and looked like he could be ripping up some big deads if he wanted too!
Then as I turned around I was almost walked over by the TEXAS TINY MEEKER, he was as always in a happy mood. I think he just likes to lift and have fun. Then I made my way to our seats front and center (could not ask for any better seats). Just as we sat down I see AL wood looking as good as he did back in 1998. He too wanted to see some of these big benches.
The MC was none other than Chuck LaMantia, he should do WWE, funny and entertaining. Now let’s get down to the real shit and that is the lifting!
198 and below we had JK and Franky and Jason Coker! They started with 600 (Franky was out here) then 650 both JK and Jason did this for the same reps. Next it was 700 and Jason Coker took it for a ride of 3 solid reps and JK did 2 and I gave him credit for one and the judges gave him zip! Ouch that hurt. He was pissed and let me say the judges were ####ing tight and did not mess around and did not give a shit who you were, well that was because I was not lifting and trust me it would not been the case. Anyway there is only one CHAMP, so here we have a guy doing 3.5 body weight for 3 reps? Then he went on to do 500 x 9 and 400 for 15 and won it all and it was no doubt JASON COKER WAS THE SHOW!
Next on to the middle guys they were some good lifts and it was very hard to follow Coker, the winner did 800 for a double. Next to the big boys. TINY GENE AND MENDY. All started with 800 GENE missed it bad and was out then Mendy did a 2 and Tiny did 3 (in my opinion) but they said 2, I told you the judges were ####ing serious. Next it was 850 Mendy did it twice and won. Next it was onto 600 which Mendy did 11 reps and so did Tiny so another set was done and both did 10 and so a 3rd set and Mendy did 6 with Tiny going 7.
The crowds were for the SUPER BENCH were the biggest of the whole show and it was standing room only for the entire show. Mendy’s and Jason Coker were the top dogs. But the star of the show had to be Jason Coker! Jesse was pissed and told me Coker better watch out come Olympia time! Somebody better control the rajan cajan ! wwhoooww
Very good show and if I were to sum it up, I would say it looked like a bunch of guys getting together on a Saturday and just having a great workout! There was some serious benching going down in Dallas Texas today!
With the end of the show I jumped back in the beamer and headed home, thinking I was glad I made the show!
