I just had stuff for sale at Marmora, mostly because it is promoted as a sales event but more so because the stairs at the entrance are a pain in the butt for bringing in showcases. At the past few CAFTA shows I have tried to improve the quality of my displays (featuring parts of my reel collection). Last show in Napannee (no stairs) I had a NFS display of rare Vom Hofe reels in a big showcase). At the Bond Head show I had a NFS display of Canadian made and marked reels in small showcases that were a pain to cart up and down stairs those steep and narrow stairs. I had a large showcase of my rare antique reels at the CAFTA show in Woodstock. They had no stairs but the number of tables was cut back without notice. I have brought a few small AL&W displays to prior shows but most of you are too sophisticated to pay much attention. Folks in our region are generally less interested in reel collecting, so I am not too disappointed by the lack of interest in my reel displays but given my increasing level of participation in ORCA I will keep promoting the collection and caring of old reels, including Canadian made and marked reels (of which I bought 4 at Marmora).
The main issue to me is that unless participants bring more new potential collectors into the show venues (and into the clubs), we are just showing the same stuff over an over to our small group of enthusiasts, in which case we end up buying and selling rather than educating. I have seen a few new faces at recent shows but IMHO we need to draw many more people through increased promotion of the events where we want to public to come in. Even free Kijiji ads are underutilized IMHO.
