He was the best driver I ever raced. He was probably the best man I ever knew. He'd tell you something, and he was always straight up about it. He'd never tell you a lie.
When Dale got famous, he used to play around in the Busch series when it got started. He'd come over and check out my car and give me advice. I'd follow his advice, and he was always right. Dale would sit and talk to me about what he felt about the track and what I should do to the car. I mostly worked with very inexperienced drivers, but Dale told me what would work, and I'd follow his advice, and damned if his advice didn't pay off in the end.
Dale Earnhardt was a hell of a man, and I don't guess I was ever a real friend of his, but he was nice enough to come around and talk to me when I was in the garage. He would prank and joke you to death, but he'd always give you good advice. I met Teresa once or twice, and she was nice. I knew Dale Jr. when he was like 5 or 6 years old. The kid out of that family that always impressed me was Kelley. She basically had her father's head for business, even at a young age. I first thought Kelley was shy, but I now realize she was just standing off the side, analyzing things. She might have been 10 or 11 or so when I first met her, but she was always thinking.
