The FCC no longer requires a code test at all. There are 3 basic levels of amateurs: Technician, General, and Extra. I'm a Technician. I have use of bands from 220 MHZ up to 10 Meters. With 10 meters, I can talk to people hundreds or thousands of miles away if conditions are just right. Mostly I talk on 2 meters, which has a bunch of repeaters. A very low wattage unit like mine can hit it and talk to people a hundered or miles away. the 660 repeater on Mount Mitchell is the highest point in the eastern US, at 6600 feet, and reaches a lot of people from that point. On that repeater, with my hand held radio, I've talked to people in Ohio and West Virginia. It's pretty cool.
