Yesterday I ploughed through no fewer than eight 'versions' of 'Ain't You Glad...?'
I say eight versions but in reality it was the same 'take' - identical - on every compilation CD I have. There's only one on the Bear Family set and, again, it's the same as all the others. Not similar, but the very same performance including the blunder at the end where Donegan yells 'One more time!' - the band think he's playing another chorus but he just tags the last line. Lon goes to the A7 chord while the others hit a G, anticipating a whole final chorus. They recover in a millisecond and join him on A7th but the error is there.
Now it's possible (but unlikely in my view) that ALL these CDs/compilations I'm listening to contain a different version to the original as it was pressed to disc for 'Lonnie' but, as I can no longer play vinyl here, I have no way of checking that.
I'm really intrigued about what you have heard. I still don't care for the Donegan version of this song - in my opinion it's vocally a bit sloppy and the mix is questionable - but I listened carefully paying particular attention to the very last sixteen bars of the song on all my CDs.
Can you specify where you found the alternate ending?
