I experienced a rush of blood when I first heard about this new release, and I actually thought that someone had found the complete recordings made by Pye when Lonnie was the support act to the Platters in 1957.
(Those were the live sessions that produced 'Gamblin' Man' and 'Putting On The Style'. I've often wondered what the other songs were for that 'run' - he was only permitted a four-song spot on the show which was surely a disappointment to the many fans who would have paid to see Donegan at the Palladium at the height of his career. I bet evenm the Platters found it tough to follow him, but they were the big-shot visiting Americans at the time, so Lonnie was deposed to second billing.)
However: Fellow 'Lonnie Loonie', Colin Williamson informs me that this will probably prove to be a recording made in the 1980s when Lonnie was touring as support (again???) to Billie Jo Spears. A Palladium appearance was scheduled, but her ill-health lead to its cancellation, and Lonnie persuaded the 'powers-that-were' to let him record his act on-stage at the Palladium. It looks like we're finally going to hear the results.
Thanks, Colin, although I can't deny that I'm only half as excited at this prospect than I would be had those 1957 tapes finally surfaced!
Inspector Colin gets promotion, despite being the bearer of sad tidings....
