I have been puzzled for some time as to the source of Billy Bragg's information in that piece but everything seems to point to the fact that he spoke to Hugh Mendl (now deceased). The version given in the article is very different to Lonnie's account, and to my mind parts of it don't hold water at all- but then, neither do parts of Lonnie's account. As ever with all matters Donegan the precise truth is elusive
