I can see Colin's logic here, but my view is that of the 'completist' (I don't think that's a real word, but it'll serve a purpose here!). If I can get everyhting in one place, as it were, I enjoy a feeling of security somehow, as though nothing of consequence has slipped through my fingers.
Remember, too, that this set appeared in 1993, and before there was such a plethora of reissued Donegan stuff on CD. I was also lured by the prospect of a detailed booklet (this turned out to be a disappointment, but....) and some nice packaging (also a disappointment!)
They've been repackaging artists' hits for years with great success - 'Greatest Hits, Vol. 21', etc, etc - and this is an elevated version of the same thing. Here we all are still talking about a singer whose last success was decades ago - Bear Family are just tapping into that potential nostalgia-market.
I also have ALL THREE of the Bear Family's Everly Brothers box-sets. I'm delighted! The hardback books are terrific, and there's a DVD of 'lost' TV appearances (well, not really 'lost', obviously, but you know what I mean). No more ancient vinyl for me, and I have that secure feeling about Don & Phil, too.
I also have the complete Janis Martin recordings (check HER out!!!) as well as the box-set on Jimmy Vryant and Speedy West - 'Flaming Guitars'; it'd take months and a small fortune to assemble this material on my own,
Thanks, Mr and Mrs Bear!!!! (I wonder if his name's Rupert?)
I'd invest in the business - if I had an ounce of acumen and a little courage.
