Vinyl or Shellac I don't know the answer, but could it be something to do with who pressed the discs ? Lonnie's 1st 45 on the Pye label was Midnight Special / When The Sun Goes Down. Issued in January 1956. Dave Thanks everyone I now feel that I am still in my youth - 60 !!!
