I guess so much of this depends on how you define 'skiffle.'
The plethora of 'skiffle' CDs hitting the market nowadays certainly opens up a discussion as to peoples conceptions of the genre.
To me, skiffle is performed by amateurs on home brew instruments primarily driven by thrumming guitar(s). In this instance that would place groups such as 'The City Ramblers' (although a professional band) securely in the frame.
Following this, I would place the early recordings of Lonnie with The Chris Barber Jazz Band strictly under the Trad Jazz banner, certainly not skiffle in any form!
With regard to a top ten skiffle records list, I frequently change my mind as to which tracks constitute my favourites. Often I rediscover a track that I had forgotten about and this puts a whole new slant on the matter! Perhaps it might be better to have a top ten skiffle groups chart?
Ah! But then I would remember someone like Lorraie Desmond and her Rebels, and the whole thing would tip up again.
Then again. Are the Rebels a true skiffle group? I mean! Oh no! Here we go again!!!!
Cheers
Barry
