I too am a totally unashamed fan of a man who probably influenced more current professional/amateur guitar players than anyone else from his era.
You will probably remember that he used to go round his fan clubs- he did in Glasgow talking about his musical influences and how in those early days he was in the main introducing large masses of us in a "modern way" to some of the amazing influential earler performers in the USA. He took it very seriously and I loved him for it- with his inimitable style he could have sung a page from the dictionary and made it exciting I feel sure.
Yes I loved Denny particularly- I met him briefly in Edinburgh at an underground (literally beneath Waverley Station) overnight jazz festival where he was appearing with Johnny Duncan's Bluegrass Boys. He was a delightful man who just exuded charissma. I note someone was searching for fellow-Scot Jimmy Currie- has he turned up?
I spoke to Albert Lee on his tour with Hogan's Heroes a couple of years back and he absolutely loved Denny and his bass player Brian had worked for Melody Maker some years before where he had interviewed Denny and loved him. He and Lonnie were great together- I often wonder why they parted although it gave us the chance to see some other brilliant lead players after him!
You mention photographs in one of the previous posts- how do you access the gallery?
Thanks again- Have a great day
(Known as "Doc" to my colleagues here- I am a retired GP now rejuvenated by retraining as a financial advisor- probably more useful than a GP many may think!!)
