No disrepsect to Lefty's as they already cemented their legacy in the history of this tournament by winning 3 of the last 5 (I think, if my memory serves my right). But, from reading about this in the paper, it seemed to be more exitement surrounding this tournament since the days of the ole Mels vs Willowbrook wars because of the higher class teams who had entered.
Matt Moore, I know you waited a long time for this and for that I am real happy for you. You put together a team that is incredible from what I read and heard (and seen at Sara Fry's tournament). It's a shame you didn't win your first title a few years ago, but things just didn't align that night (it was a "blue" moon!!!). We won 8 games in the losers bracket on Sunday and I don't think I have been the same since physically or mentally
. Yea, we had some controversy that made us all "blue" (I'll stop the jokes now), I'll admit it, but it would have been nice to win that at the time for your pop. Things happen for a reason and now you got your championship. No matter what anybody says, they can never take this away from you, enjoy it and I am very happy for you and Franny and the guys you have had since the old days that have been so close (Keith, Rob, etc), Also happy for the new guys also.
Tom McLaughlin and Lefty's, somehow, someway, you guys always find a way to get to the championship night, hell Tommy, you, yourself have been there about 10 straight times going back to Hooters and then the Mels people, then Outlaws and then Lefty's. Congrats to you on another good team.
To my buddy Calvin Butcher, a heartfelt congrats to you on the MVP, You always come up big ... remember what we talked about at that Charity tournament up on the hill at Furey Road last month, when it comes time to play, some people play and you are one of them.
To Larry McFadden, you do not bow your head to no man (well, actually you do, since you are 8-foot-2, but you know what I mean). You put together a great team also, and in any other year, probably would have won. Do not feel bad about this, trust me, I know how you feel (you seen me and my knuckleheads get double dipped by Mels that one year and told me after that game that it was just their night and it was). Sher-kee (according to the newspaper article I read) just had top-tier players and top-tier equipment not normally seen here. And I say that with no disrespect to the Sher-kee team as they probably could have won a state title with the talent they had. Larry, Look back on where you started and where you are now, how much you and your team has improved over the last 5 years. That is a testament to your will to win. Frank Smith is a warrior and always will be. I'm sure you made the Millenniun Sunday League proud, the league has now been in the championship game twice in the last three years. Remember, you did defeat 3 of the top--4 teams, excluding yourself. The Hook league has long had much success in this tournament. But they need some other league as a rival. They used to have the IVSL, Father Nall, Wallingford and Leedom Leagues, which have all since folded. They had a good rival in the Main Line Radnor League with some of the Norristown teams for awhile also. That league doesn’t really send teams to this event anymore. This area isn’t exactly exploding with new leagues, so in order for this tournament to continue to thrive, it’s good to see that the Marcus Hook League still produces great teams and also that the few remaining leagues in this county like the Millennium Sunday, Millennium Upland, Delco Independent, Lawrence Park, Delcom, Delco Industrial, Community Church, Emergency Services League and whatever league I may have missed all produce better teams due to the condensing of the folded leagues into the still surviving league. I always believe that in order for some team or league to be great, it must have a great rival as well. Just my humble opinion, see below. -, Steve
PS- I can't end this post without mentioning Dolan's Pub, Andy Ruhf, I remember when you played in the fall league with us years ago and said you were going to put together a good team someday, well, you guys got everybody's attention, you are a good guy and friend, What your guys did against these powerhouses (hell, the 3 teams ahead of you were all of higher classification and you guys were Class-E, but you have some good young people like Joe Pace and Jack Kelly's brother (sorry, forgot name). I always wish you the best.
I hope you guys raised a ton of money for cancer and I'm sure this coming weekend, Joe's Charity Challenge will raise another pile of loot, so even though the Hook had the ASA/NSA, split conversion, in the end, everybody is in these events for the same reason, to raise money for this dreaded disease. Also, in the future if teams are as strong as the teams you had this year, maybe you can do a A flight and a B flght. Just food for thought,
