Butch I agree with this to an extent and an even better example is the Greyhound. These dogs are bred for pure performance and were originally hunting dogs when brought to America and obviously their prey drive is off the charts chasing the little bunny around at mock speeds. Also considering horses are produced 1 at a time and these dogs 6-8 at a time the percntages that actually make it to the real stage are even less yet even the bottom 1% of this breed is superior to top prospects of other breed just based on ability alone. The main factor with most other breeds is that most are over breed for profits with no actual real ability or most other factors tested other than looks, and are so far displaced genetically from there breed origins. This is the same reason from what I've read about GSD's that in order to get real prospects most serious trainers go over seas due to the watered down stock here in America. I had a friend with a pure bred out of good lines and this dog was junk, this dog was in my friends yard with his two young sons, never seen me before and let me come right into the yard with out a peep or any motion at all. I could have took the kids and when my friend came out the dog would have been standing in the same spot motionless. I feel your premise but I think you have been dealing with performance type dogs for most of your life and don't realize that the majority of dogs being bred in this country are bred strickly for profit with no real criteria based on performance or any other real factor. If all k9's were bred strickly for performance with the intent of winning in some forum other than looks, then I would agree 100% with the 2% rule but only a couple of breeds actually fit into this catagory IMO.
