Had a great time in Virginia, I didn't bring home any trophies, but I did bring home a wealth of learning, which is more important to me. I came home, very proud of my boys.
Luger did take 3rd in the training division, I'm afraid training him with a ball as a reward, kinda of bites you in the behind, when they use a ball as an distraction, and of course, he went for it, took awhile to get him, over the ball, he just couldn't understand why he could not have that one, oh well, that's how the ball bounces, huh. His bite work was OK, not as aggressive as his usual, it took some getting used to the building. He has never been indoors and the sound difference, did bother him a bit. At first I did not think he would do anything, but patience and a little time, he came through at least until the ball, in all I was proud. I did send him on a long send attack for hardest hitting, just to see if he would go and tried a call off, he did come off the bite walked towards me about 3or5 steps, but returned to the attack. This did allow me to see the possibilities, and what to work towards. So many things have been said about the training of Luger, that I needed to see for my self, if he could be controlled off leash, and I do believe I'll continue with his training. I did not see anything that could not be worked out. He did not seem out of controll, just not trained to come all the way off and back to me.
As for Scout, well I need to trust him more, and not worry so much for everyone else, that's gonna be my goal. As I have said in the past, it's mostly me that's learning, not the dogs, so much. I guess I'm most proudest of him. He did not go after the ball, like Luger did, but he did follow it with his eyes and 1 judge caught that, but he did not chase it like he did last time, so he didn't fall for it this time, and I was glad of that. The long send was a bit tricky for us both, he went, I called him off, he outed, and then I called him to me, well he came back about 2/3Rd's of the way spun around and went into a down position, I called again, he then came about 1/2 way and spun around, dropped in a down again, I again called him, and again he repeated his spin and drop at about 8 or so feet from me at this time, I then looked up and said sorry folks but that's all the chances I was willing to take, and I then went for him. I could see that with each spin and drop, he was getting wound up, and about to blow, so I went to him, costing points, but keeping 2 judges out of harms way. I do believe they appreciated that allot, however, I do believe he would have went back after the decoy. In all me and my boys had an awesome time and met some really great people and their outstanding dogs. Hope they will brave the 21 hour drive and come to Texas in November.
