Wow! Richmond, Fredricksburg, Spotsylvania, History & heroes every where you turn, in Ol' Virginny, and Dream Team Cane Corso and Fila Sao Miguel, kennel hosted the latest bit of History & Heroes this past weekend.
I have to tell everyone that the facility at Colonial K9 is certainly on a par with other monuments in the area. Not far away you have Washington DC and a lot of really nice buildings, but! If I could pick a place to live and had to choose between Colonial K9, oh, say..... the White House, no doubt, I'm going with Colonial K9, this place is a dog mans dream.
But this is about the heroes, the folks that step up and see just how good their dog can be and go home to make them better. And they were there in spades. So here's the report.
Friday night started with a Personal Protection seminar. And the seminar started like any other seminar I do with a little confusion and maybe skepticism, about what the heck is different about proper PP training and the sport things every one is doing.
This one started out with the mastiff that had been told they couldn't do sport, and then a GSD labeled "no drive" and then the classic "I don't want a Jute Junkie, I want a real protection dog!"
I noticed at first the crowd hung back against the wall and really seemed more interested in talking among themselves, especially one of the local "sport" dog trainers, who was really good at popping a whip!
But as I explained a little abut the importance of understanding proper tactics to help your dog and save your life on the street, a few began coming over the edge of the arena and listening.
As the Cane Corso that had been told they couldn't do "sport" began firing up, on command, with some viscous alerts, a few more people began gathering around. By the time the GSD with "no drive" was in Four Wheel going over everything in her path, we had a real crowd listening, then came the Jute Junkie Pit!
The handler was right, the dog was totally equipment happy. Would this dog ever bite for protection or would all potential attackers be asked to "take a sleeve" before kicking in the door of the house?
This was a very good little pit with a strong bond to his handler so I wasn't worried about getting the dog to looking at the man instead of the sleeve. It took a few minutes but we had the little pit responding to a civil alert and when I looked in his eyes the only reflection I saw was my nose. Seems the little guy caught on pretty quick, he just needed to be shown the way.
By this time everyone was at the rail asking questions about Proper PP training (well every one but the Sport trainer, he was outside trying to find someone to watch him pop his whip) we went over quite a few things from the "Training Without A Decoy" DVD and hopefully gave a few people a clear understanding of protection work.
Speaking of Protection training, it is time for me to get back to my real job, so we will continue the results of the history making Fall Brawl tomorrow!!!
BE HERE BABY!!!!!!!!!
Listen Well, Bite Hard!!!
