The three fighting styles are work based and were probably developed centuries ago to accomplish certain task. The more efficient the dog was at that task the more he was bred, the more he was bred the more dogs looked like him/her and so it went round and round and we ended up with types of dogs, that later became Breeds. But they are all the product of those original work efforts.
The three groups are the Mastiff, the Herder, and the Terrier. The fighting styles for each are truly unique and if you have ever had reason to watch all three types apprehend humans you already know what I am talking about.
1. The Mastiff will grab with a hard intense bite that delivers all the "ouch" those huge jaws are capable of every time. The Mastiff then automatically begins to pull down and backward. Just like when they pulled attacking cavalry from the backs of charging horses, probably the first job they had.
The bite is usually shallow but this allows the dog to disengage quickly if a sword gets swung at his head and also keeps them a greater distance from harm as they pull.
2. The Herder, moved sheep around the pasture but when the wrong ones tried to dart into the pen, or leave the herd it was the dog that reached out and held the lamb fast and firm. Shallow bites with the longer canines could cause damage that could get infected harm the lamb. The successful Herders grabbed with a full bite that gave them more control of the lambs movements with the least physical damage as they stood firm and held the lamb.
3. The Terriers were a varmint dog, also known as the Assassins of the dog world. They took out every nuisance from rats to badgers. There purpose was to engage and then kill. As a result they developed a violent shaking to keep the victim of balance as well as speed the kill.
4. The Hybrid? the United Kingdom gave us the best Mastiffs, they also gave us the deadly Terrier, and the hybrid as well. The Bulldog!
As bull-baiting became more popular bigger dogs were needed but tenacity and endurance were needed as well. This is all theory on my part but, if you add a terrier to a mastiff, you had size, power, and that violent shaking as well as teh tenacity it takes stay on that bull.
You have a fighting style that is more defensive, like the Mastiff and also more violent like the Terrier. This is an effective style for thick skinned hogs and bulls but can sure cause human skin to tear and allow escapes or the recovery of a weapon.
The Mastiff may also tear free but not as likely.
The Herder may control the attacker well, but with control the instinct, instead of fight and destroy, the dog is more open to an attack from the person they are trying to control.
There are strong points to each style as proven by centuries of work. There are weak points as well. The challenge for the trainer is to get the Mastiff to bite as full as the Herder. to get the Herder to learn a fighting style that will keep it safe on the street.
And that is what a PP dog learns to do, well... at least that is what a K9 PRO SPORTS certified dog should do.
Now, is anyone interested in a K9 Mixed Martial Arts program?
(Thanks MikeV good suggestion)
