I'm going to try and put my thoughts into words here, more or less thinking out loud:

My dog needs to understand that my bond with him/her is stronger (more important) than his desire to respect the human/dog (leader/follower) relationship with anybody other than myself.

Jon N's answer of trying to have a stranger break your command of down/stay seems like a good place to start.
