As I said before, THE OFF IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THE THE ON! I cannot stress that enough!
I just had it brought to my attention that I have left out a VERY IMPORTANT part of teaching your serious dog to turn off. SAFETY
My first trip home after boot camp, I got to shoot every single one of my dogs. I had left them at my parents house and I had to go away again.
Quite by accident, we found out that anyone could turn my dogs on, BUT ONLY I COULD TURN THEM OFF!
Please don't be a Dumbass and follow my footsteps.
Once the dog gets the commands down good, your Spouse should train with the dog so all commands are second nature to them, AND the dog understands that all commands given are COMMANDS!(If Mama spoils them)
When you are nearing the end of the dog's training, any child of speaking age should be brought out and trained to turn the dog off. "Okay" and "Out" are all the child needs to know. My dogs are extremely edgy around small children so they are looking for an excuse to turn on already. The dog must learn to "Turn Off" on command, when directed by the children.
I once had a dog convert some Jehovah Witness folks that came into my yard in South Carolina. My 6 month old Daughter was busy chewing on the Dobe's ear. The back yard was full of land mines that I did not wish for her to eat, so the two of them were in the front yard on a blanket when the uninvited folks breached the grass from the road. I never said a word. Crossing onto the grass with a baby in the yard, was a NO-NO. I heard them speaking in tongues as they ran off into the sunset. Rigo was on their asses preaching hellfire and brimstone. Those folks left pamphlets littered all over the ground, and I had to pick them all up myself.
