I want to clarify something. Just because most of our pictures are of dogs on leash, does not mean we don't test a dog off leash. In fact, we do. And, even more importantly is we did this PRIOR to training. And, even then...we did it with levels of pressure that many sport trainers and PSD trainers would never do to not only an untrained dog but also to even a trained dog...as they wouldn't want to have such conflict reduce the dog's score on a sport card later on since such work will leave long term negative effects on a less than great dog.
Here is a dog that we tested with 50 stick hits OFF LEASH, at times with me backing up and the dog working alone. I would NEVER condone this type of test by a trainer on a client's dog, but we did this with some of our foundation dogs to see their GENETIC predisposition to perform at PP...as I am a breeder first. Since this video was made, the dog has had some training to make him even better. My point here is a PP dog SHOULD be able to do a send reliably...but more importantly a family PP dog should be able to safely live with his/her family. http://www.chimerakennels.com/preachermananaturalguardian.wmv I only did this test because I am a breeder first, and a trainer second...and this was a foundation dog for our program. Take a dog like this and build them up with good training since day 1, and you have an INCREDIBLE CAPABLE PP DOG.
