"...[L]aying on the ground motionless..." -- face down and silent.
Personally, for me and my dogs, and with my family's safety in mind, I have yet to conjure a reason to command my dog to release a malefactor, while he or she is standing upright... holding a baton (or anything else for that matter). Concern for the Release indicates we have exhausted all other efforts at defusing the situation; Engagement has ensued. WE are the tip of the spear -- strike fast, hard, and deep. Shouldn't we remove any shadow of any doubt BEFORE we call for the cessation of Violence of Action?
Even in a SchH trial, there are exercises to simulate a re-attack:
Defense Against an Attack
During Guarding (35)
Attack on Dog out of Back Transport (15)
Attack on Dog out of Motion (10)
This is my wife, my children -- why risk it?
Alert
Engage
Maim
Maul
Dismember
Disembowel
Disembody... doubt removed.
At least that's how I see it....
