"He sees right through the exercise, right through the equipment and is focused on the man."
A personal protection dog that focuses on the man, will in fact, focus on the man. For “us to think” that the dog doesn’t know the difference between “French linen/jute/burlap” in its mouth, and the very millisecond that he has flesh and blood in his mouth, well, we’re just fooling ourselves. When the dog is after the man, he will go after the man, he will release, and he will redirect and strike to other extremities to get to that flesh and blood. (that’s one reason why you better pay close attention to your fingers and hands in a bite jacket, they “will” release and try to come up the open end of the sleeve) He wants to hurt you bad, he wants to know you feel the pain. If a man is on the field with a dog that wants the man, he better have more on his body then a sleeve. (left or right arm). He better have full body protection, or he better be awful damn fast. A dog that’s really trying to hurt you doesn’t know what a “nice, calm, full mouth bite” is, and that will be completely taboo on the schutzhund field. A thinking dog knows the difference. If he continues to hit the sleeve, and only the sleeve, and “holds.“ it’s because he is operating in the manner that he was conditioned to operate in , and that is what they will want him to be “converted” to, and will proceed to do just that. Other wise, he will "not" score the points. When a dog is worked in civil agitation without equipment, and hasn’t been conditioned to equipment, he smells that flesh, he wants that flesh, he wants to EAT YOU.
This, in my opinion, is one of the differences between the Schutzhund/sport and "serious" protection dogs.
I’m very anxious to hear Butch’s comments.
