They could call it "European Ballet Training" as long as it produced a dog that makes you safe.
I happen to agree that most Law Enforcement dogs should have more of a Sport type training because of lawsuits. They are a huge target for Lawyers. Their job is to detain. Their partner has handcuffs and a loaded weapon, and is trained to use it. You rip off a few faces and the city government will ban your using dogs.
It is nothing for someone to invest at least a year to find the perfect pup out of the perfect litter. The trainer you pick is probably more important than the pup. A good Trainer will take an average dog and make him a jam up Protection Dog. A poor Trainer will make excuses like genetics.
TiberiusRex got her dog as a hand-me-down from a military family that was going overseas I believe. I think she is his fourth home. HE IS 14 MONTHS OLD! She had him one month before we started training, and yesterday he was willing to lay his life on the line after 5 weeks, to protect her from an intruder in her home. Do you expect that from your $1500.00 pups? She does from her free pup. He is a pup with no balls. She is serious as hell about making him a damn good dog, and I have no doubt that he will be a bad ass dog. It ain't because his genetics, It is because of her attitude for success! It ain't about the money spent on a dog, it is about the effort spent after you get the dog. Effort to find a Trainer that will make the dog exactly like you want him.
To the best of my knowledge, it is not against the law to spend a year finding the right Trainer, before you spend a year to find the pup. You do not have to take a dog with you to see a Trainer work. See him working with several other dogs before he ever even sees your dog.
