Above, the sky was boiling, like dark thunderclouds curling upon themselves like pirhanas in a feeding frenzy. And below, all was silent.
The air was pregnant. The stallion's skin twitched as if if were high summer and he were plagued by flies, for the energy that swarmed around him was so palpable it tickled, like the solf-walking legs of insects, and put him on edge -- put all on edge -- flinching in expectation of the bite to come.
And he loved it.
He stood by the river banks, feeling the black waters rush by, pulled from the heart of the mountins to the ocean's unsatiable belly. The dark goddess had quieted even her veins tonight, so the river moved in eerie silence along with the rest of the landscape.
He looked upon the blackness of the surface, seeing neither reflection nor revelation of what the dark waters concealed. His bones tingled with the magic of the land and his imagination fed upon it, seeing waterdrakes and spectres and the souls of the dead, gliding along the riverbed, concealed from sight.
When he turned to the trees, he sensed spirits there, too; crouching in the now-rustling leaves and cackling wildly into the strengthening winds, a frenzied audience willing the Great Sorceress to bring down her destruction this eve.
Oh, yes -- driven half-mad with impatience, they'd be a pack of hyenas, calling in the torrents with blood-frenzy.
Turning his attentions from the trees, he studied the shallow valley before him, sensing but not seeing its equine occupants.
Those, too, haunted by ghosts, he knew with sudden certainty.
Ajuoga lowered his head and exhaled gently, kissing the land with his spirit. I'm yours now, wild lady. Do with me what you will.
