Call your Congressman to tell them to co-sponsor HR 2381, the Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act of 2009 - the “Safe Lifting Act”
Here’s How: Call the Capitol Hill Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Congressman or Representative.
OR Visit www.house.gov to find your Congressman’s contact information. Simply enter in your zipcode and the name of your Congressman will come up.
Most of the time you will only talk to the person answering the phone and not the Congressman. They may not know what HR2381 is and will just want basic details. Be prepared to give your name and address as they will want to verify that you are a constituent.
Below are sample scripts, and remember to tell them you are a health care worker and a concerned constituent.
CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE
A sample message for your call:
"Hello. My name is ________ ,
I live in (city/state) and work as a _____________.
Health Care Workers are being injured on the job every day as they lift, move and turn residents or patients who are unable to help themselves. The average nurse or nursing assistant moves or lifts an equivalent of more than 1.8 tons per day. This is costly – in pain and suffering for injured workers, but also because we cannot afford to lose our good workers to injuries that take them out of the job market
I believe that all healthcare workers deserve to work in a safe environment. I urge support of:
• H.R. 2381, Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act of 2009, -
This legislation protects our health care workers and helps patients achieve optimal outcomes while saving money in workers comp costs for providers.
Please co-sponsor HR2381 introduced by John Conyers Jr (MI) which sets occupational safety and health standards to reduce injuries to patients, direct-care registered nurses, and all other health care workers by establishing a safe patient handling and injury prevention standard.
