Hi everybody. I'm going to post anonymously as I'm not quite sure yet what to do about this yet:
I'm currently in an LNA program in the state of New Hampshire. My instructor recently decided to tell our class of a "funny" story about one of his/her former patients. Unfortunately, he/she decided to not only reveal the diagnosis and medication prescribed, but went on to reveal this person's name!
I was appalled, as I know this patient personally and he/she is very involved in our local community. To cap things off, my instructor repeatedly makes negative remarks about homosexuals, Arabs, and obese people. He/she also pushes Christian beliefs on the class. While it might not be illegal, I find this behavior highly unethical on its own.
Normally, I would report the HIPPA violation right away, but since I'm still in the LNA class, I'm afraid of jeopardizing my good standing. Also, when it comes time to start applying for jobs, my instructor would be my only nursing-related reference. I would hate to lose that reference.
What should I do? Your thoughts and insight are much appreciated!
