According to new surveys from satellites and aircraft documentation there is an alarming acceleration in the melting of glaciers around the world.
This acceleration increased dramatically during the mid 1990's, which was the hottest decade on record.
There are, of course, many differing opinions on why this is happening but few disagree that the glaciers are retreating.
The planet has approximately 160,000 glaciers and according to Lonnie Thompson, a geologist at the Byrd Polar Research Center, speaking about one glacier in particular - "You can literally sit there and watch it retreat"
