Sorry I wasn't clearer in that opinion. Many in the northern hemisphere were observing sun spots, keeping weather journals, and such. Far fewer in the southern hemisphere were doing so.
Of course proxy data is available from all over the world - we are only lacking anecdotal stuff which can have a little value... such as illustrations of folks partying on the frozen River Thames in London during the "Little Ice Age" and similar. Eric the Red naming Greenland as such gives us a nice clue.
How did I find this board? My web logs show every source of links to the editorial, now numbering 567 at this time, and readership in 86 different countries. Everybody's famous for 15 minutes.
