Yes, the DJ could/should announce something like "this one is for .... that was taught earlier at the lesson."
I've heard various instructors asking more experienced dancers to not do variations during the lessons, and I think that's a great idea, too.
Instructors really shouldn't pick songs that are very popular for another dance. I know it's more work for them, but, man, there are thousands of good songs that don't get played.
