We were one of the guilty parties that Saturday night, who were dancing the horseshoe. It was one of the rare nights we arrived after the class, so we didn't catch the fact that the Sweetheart Stroll was the danced to "Tougher Than the Rest" during the class. A lot of the regulars are "conditioned" to dancing the horseshoe to that song. We figured it out after the first 30 seconds, and tried to create an inside lane for the horseshoers, but it didn't catch on. In such instances where the class utilizes a song which is popular for other dances as well, I think Michelle's suggestion to have the DJ make an announcement is a great idea. The Sweetheart Stroll seems to suffer from a sort of "secondary dance" stigma, as the songs that work well for it are often popular for more widely-known dances as well. Case in point: we love dancing the Sweetheart Stroll to Lee Ann Womack's "I May Hate Myself in the Morning", but the song invariably attracts way more two-steppers, creating the aforementioned conflict out of the floor. I'm glad to see the dance returning to the calendar, as I think it's a great "entry level" dance as well as adding something different to the lineup, and the more often the class is offered, the more it will catch on I'm sure.
The Barn Dance is way cool; we caught a class earlier in the year, and it would be awesome to see it catch on. The only bummer is that it depends on a near-perfect balance of guys to gals, to make the concentric circles flow well, and avoid the "odd man out" snag. I realize though that would be nearly impossible to pull off at Bushwhackers, or any open dance floor for that matter. I'd personally love to see the dance catch on. If I remember right, "Wild Wild West" by Escape Club works for the Barn Dance, and is fairly long...but then you'd have the "Dueling Dances" dilemma on the dance floor once again.
Oh, to live in a perfect world...!
