I DJ on most Thursday and Saturday nights and will respond to a couple of the items from this posting.
RE #1 - I don't care what type of dancing you are there to do, the dance floor is to be shared equally by everyone.
#2 - Tips don't guarantee a song will be played, especially if the song has already been played (besides, I don't usually keep track of who tipped me and what they requested). I don't play the songs in the order they are on the sheet. On a Saturday night I am usually working off two or three (sometimes four) pages of requests, just because it's first on the list doesn't mean there aren't other songs on other pages ahead of it. And, if it's written at the top before 7 pm, I am assuming it's from the night before. Lastly, I play a majority of what's on the lists sooner or later - so make your request well ahead of time.
#3 - Do not request songs from Joyce or management. However, you may want to ask Joyce how many line dances are played during the night.
#4 - Just about every 3rd song is a line dance, this is reflected in the play-log of the - it records the song info and date/time it was played. I'm more than happy to show it to anyone. There is no way I could get away with playing only 2 or 3 line dance songs in a two hour period, regardless of what night it is, so I have to call BS on that (if I was working that night). There is no specified night for a certain dance. Yes, a line dance is taught on Thurs and usually a couples dance on Saturday. This does not mean the whole night, or even the majority of the night, will be that type of dance (besides, some couples dances are pattern dances, not just 2step/waltz/west coast swing/etc.).
#5 - agreed...to an extent. Joyce has taught many, but many of them are rarely done anymore. How often do I get a request for "slappin' leather"...almost never...except from people who are from out of town. People request the same line dance songs/dances almost every week, it's not my choice to play the same ones. The easy dances (electric slide, boot scoot boogie, watermelon crawl, strokin' are "staples" because they are the easiest ones to learn/do and, invariably, they will be the only dance or dances that some people know. I might add that there are people that have been going in there for years that still request the same song/dance every night.
If anyone wants to discuss their concerns with me, feel free to come up and talk with me at the DJ booth. Believe it or not, I'm pretty reasonable. I play music for everyone to dance to, not just one segment of the crowd.
