2 hands from JCC Monday afternoon, many bidding misunderstandings! They were in the same round, the same direction. #21:
DLR: AK10963, 75, AK, AK3
Resp: 2, AQJ1086, J5, Q742
Suggest bidding sequence; 2C-3H - first chance to have a misunderstanding. Most play immediate 2H is artificial showing a bust. 3S by opener, 4H by Responder 6H by Opener. One played 6NT and made it but the KH is 3rd behind the Queen and can be held up rendering the hearts useless. QJxx of spades were behind the spade bidder so the 6S bidder went down. After 2C and a positive response, slam should be explored. At one table, the 3H jump was explained at WEAK! Of course, that is NOT what the jump should mean. Just as 2C-3C or 3D are positive responses showing a useful 5+ card suit, so is 3H.
The next hand:
DLR: AKQ2, AK8, A976, KJ
Resp: 108764, Q542, 5, A83
Suggested auction 3N (24-25) - 4C (Stayman!)- 4S - 6S. Of course 3N as point count sometimes sounds like a shut out - IT IS NOT! It is point count and distribution. The first and lowest club bid after a natural notrump opener (without interference) is Stayman. This 4C bid is Stayman and a jump to 5C would be "Super Gerber" asking for aces. Stayman, not transfer should be used whenever Responder holds a 4 card major. Only one pair got to slam in spades and it was again thru a misbid, the others all played 3 or 4 notrump making 5 or 6 or 7.
