Hello all you sexy Lady Ruggers -
It has been quite a spring season; re-organizing, planning, fundraising, playing rugby, and partying hard. I've had a great time this Spring with my rugby team, and I hope all of you are just as excited as I am for SUMMER SEVENS.
Just for all of our rookies to know, during the summer, we shift from playing the traditional 15's rugby to a shorter/faster game of 7's rugby.
We will not have set up matches with other teams, we will attend Tournaments and play multiple games in a day. A game of 7's rugby is 14 minutes long with two 7 minute halves... but with less players it's a lot more running and a lot faster ball handling. Increased fitness and ball handling skills is something we will really need to concentrate on during practice.
It is very important to yourself, and your teammates that you are at as many practices as possible. 7's rugby can be a lot of fun if you are in shape and have the skills to effectively play the game. In 7's everyone is basically a BACK... so our forwards will need to get more accustomed to handling the ball and passing.
Our Summer Sevens schedule is kicking off with our very own SOUTHERN BELLE SEVENS tournament May 16th. SPREAD THE WORD! This tournament is our opportunity to step out on our own as a Women's Rugby team, and hopefully start a yearly tradition that will identify us as an established club in Columbia. The more visibility we have in our community and the Rugby community will increase our numbers and strengthen our team. LIL Julie has done a great job organizing many aspects of this tournament. Please make yourself available to assist her in tasks that need to be completed leading up, during, and after the tournament. This is a team effort to make a name for ourselves, let's all pitch in.
Finally, my last words about Summer SEVENS is that this is a great season to recruit new rugby players. 7's is an easier game to start with, is less contact, and will allow us to focus on ball handling, fitness, and on the field quick thinking - the essentials of rugby. Jo is our Recruiting member of the Board - please assist her in any way possible to bring people out to practice and get them involved. I would love to use the fun summer SEVENS to attract and retain a total of 20 players for our team to go into the Fall 15's season.
Thanks everyone. Practice tonight 7-9pm at Owens Field!
