I appreciate your word-nerdery. To add to your suggestion -- in colloquial Scots bevy is used to mean going out to get drunk or just booze.
"You goin' out on the bevy tonight?"
"We'll be there at 6, did you get the bevy in?"
I'm positive it comes from the French, many old Scots words and slang are a mixture of Gaelic and French.
