I have just emailed myspace customer service this question;
"Hello there, I am registered as a musician on myspace. As an independant unsigned artist it takes quite a lot of hours at the computer 'adding' other musicians and bands as 'friends' by sending 'friend requests'. I first try and find a band that i like, or i type in a keyword or phrase. But still I have to manually click on 'add friend' again and then go back to their profile, wait for that to load... Basically, it's a long arduous process, which when I find people have accepted my friend request I really appreciate all my long hard hours of work on promoting myself.
Sometimes I am nicely surprised by other independant unsigned artists sending friend requests to me which I gladly accept.
But, Why is it that I also sometimes get 'friend requests' from musicians signed to major labels, and when I look at their friends list they have for example over 200,000 friends, but are still sending out friend requests?
Who is sending out these friend requests? a lot of the time it's for music that i don't really like, and it's quite clear that who or what that has sent the friend request has clearly not been listening to my music or even noted the genres in which i am listed.
Is there some kind of computer programme used by major record labels/companies that is attatched to myspace that just sends out friend request to seemingly absolutely everyone or anyone on myspace?
I'm inclined to think this is more realistic rather than workers in an office manually adding friends on myspace for an artist because the amount of man-power required to do such a task for the promotion of one artist would take a long time and therefore would require extortionate amounts of money to employ staff to do this.
So if it is a computer programme, adding people as friends to myspace, how come all the major labels can get away with this, and unsigned independant artists have to manually add people as friends?
In terms of promotion, it doesn't seem fair.
So my question is this; What is myspaces' agreement with major labels used of computer programmed promotional tools using myspace?"
so,
What are other peoples opinions on this?
Is it just promotional 'spam'?
Why can't we all have some sort of php scripted computer program to add people on myspace?
I guess then, the value of having loads of friends on myspace would then be devalued some what wouldn't it? It just seems unfair , that's all.
