That article was written with UK weather in mind, We seem to share cold & damp Winters. Maybe we are just a bit colder 
I keep all the air in unless it's above freezing!
Good air circulation seems to be the only way to reliably overwinter things here. (In the past, everything I have tried tying up and wrapping usually has rotted by Spring)
