It is best to build a cage within a cage. I usually wrap my Trachycarpus fort. and Takil palms in landscape cloth, then I leave a foot of space between the palm and the next surrounding fence. Between that and the final circumferance of fence is another foot, which is stuffed with straw, which seems to be warmer than leaves.
Then the whole thing is tarped, works great for now over 5 years
