Hi guys, thanks for the welcome!
Alan, I used to call myself the 'sprinkler queen', because I was out every morning before work, dragging hoses & watering-last summer, I put in a Mr.Landscaper micro irrigation system in the beds surrounding the house & a ittle further out- it really saved me last summer, w/ the incredible heat & drought. I still have sprinkler hoses on the perimeter beds & I still have to drag hoses, but not nearly as much as I used to. The soil, well, I can't do much about that (not in MY lifetime, no matter how much I amend), so I just keep experimenting w/ plants.
Jay, congratulations on your upcoming arrival, I'll bet your wife is REALLY ready to not be pregnant anymore (I can still remember those last few weeks). My daughter's 9th birthday was this past Sat. & we had an outdoor tiki/luau party, w/ croquet, bocce, hula hoops & jump ropes, a tiki pinata-it was a blast & it only started to rain as everyone was leaving. Spring bdays are great, you can have outdoor parties & Cinco de Mayo none the less!(great planning on your part).
Let me know, roughly, what type of Japanese maple you prefer (red or green, dwarf or large) & I'll set one aside to bring you, next time our paths cross-it's fun to plant a tree when your child is born & watch it grow. We were always moving, when my kids were born (my husband's in the Army), so I had to leave alot of gardens behind. This is the longest we've ever lived in one place, so I'm taking advantage of it.
I'm getting a few more plants from Sean on his next trip (a butia, 2 blue needles, & a chamaerops cerifera) & Monday, I spent the day at work, unloading a huge truck of tropicals from FL, in the pouring rain, for 5.5 hours-I think I still love my job...
