Hi, I'm Linda, from Alexandria, VA (Jay, I think I met you at the VPS Chilly Palm dropoff, hope you're enjoying your palms as much as I am).
I've been planting in my suburban yard for the last 3 years, my longest term 'tropicals' are a windmill palm that's made it through 2 winters outside, in a protected location (s. side of house, low brick wall on east, near a dryer vent-don't know if that's helping)& the figs-I think I have about 7 varieties. Some of the things I planted last summer seem to have overwintered successfully also, 2 feijoa, agave 'Mr. Ripple', musa basjoo, musella lasiocarpa, some small Trachy 'Takil', 2 jujubes, deodara 'Karl Fuchs'.
I had alot of plants that I overwintered in my garage-butia eriospatha, washingtonia robusta & a small filifera 'Nevada', sabal palmetto, & a dozen small trachys, sabal minors 'Birmingham' & 'Cape Hatteras'. I've already planted out the sabals, including the Brazorias I got from Chilly Palms, & I'm putting in 3 more trachys that I *scored* from HD-5 gal pots for $18 each! I also just got 4 pawpaws (asamina triloba)from Peterson's pawpaws, that I've been waiting for for 2 yrs. I think they'll be very tropical-looking, I hope they'll do ok (I know they don't transplant easily & they're in my terrible clay soil).
I've also killed numerous plants (but we won't go into that now). I have a p/t job at a large garden center, which gives me access to lots of great plants (I'm interested in different plants-palms, orchids, J. maples, shady perennials, edibles, etc.) Look forward to sharing tropicalesque plantings with you guys!
