I think this is scare moungering. Brakes in themselves are not dangerous if they are correctly fitted and maintained. I know you have concerns but the incident in question was perhaps a freak, and not something that happens every week. I've certainly never heard of brake cables coming adrift before. The number of races/bikes with no problems should be taken into account when making a decision. I agree that the vast majority of riders do not use their brake but don't consider that to be a reason for their removal. I was always lead to beleive that the brake was there to satisfy the insures as it is hardly responsible to put a youngster on a fast bike without any means of stopping. OK we all know that the brake is probably not substantial enough to stop the bike at speed but if it satisfies the insurers and keeps the premiums down then I can see no problem.
