I have just finished reading Paul Theroux's "Kingdom by the Sea" an account of his walking and train tour of the entire British coast in 1982. What he describes is dismal and sombre and already demonstrates a severe decline in the British coast both ecological and population wise. If the one thing that England always had as a pressure release was a day or week at the seaside resort. No more; no more - boarding houses are continually empty and the good days have gone. I think the only village or small town that impressed him at all on his trip was Tenby. It appears to me that England is decaying from the coast inwards rather than the other way around. It is a shrinking island in so so many ways, from culture to terrain!
