Nice magnolia! Sounds like a good one. I have Bracken's Brown Beauty. (Wanted a smaller size) ... it's been a good bloomer so far, and stayed in a nice shape, but it's not grown a lot so far. I guess next summer will be its third summer in the ground here, so things may change.
The Livistonia was one I picked up from Giant for way cheap after they nearly killed it - maybe $2? - in the spring. I popped it in the ground and figured, hey, for $2, that's cheaper than most annuals and who knows - I might get a second year out of it if it's happy in that spot. Well, turns out it was happy in that spot. Was really a carefee plant all summer, pushed up a lot of fronds, looks like a million bucks now. It's in a tough bed, too, being under a maple and with some of the least-improved soil I have here (working on it). The maple leaves have fallen nicely over the crown and I shoved some mulch up around the edges. I might dump some more mulch on it later. I'm feeling really hopeful. All that topgrowth has to mean it did a lot of growth down below - because I did not fertilize that bed much at all. I'll be really happy if it makes it thru the winter, but if it succumbs, hey, it was $2, right?
